Zimbabwe has recently been experiencing extreme weather conditions with temperatures soaring as high as 45oC. Most of the open wells have dried up. This creates a lot of distress for the communities who rely on these sources of water. It also this means longer distances to fetch drinking water under a very hot sun.
Last week Boniface Mpofu, Director of the Showers of Blessings Trust, visited Zvishavane and met with the chief and the councillors to update them of the intention to drill more boreholes in the local region. This news with received with great excitement. Boniface reports, “We went out together with the local councillors and the community leaders during the identification of the sites and they could not hold back the joy despite the fact that the drilling has not yet been done.
“It is heart-warming that the people have faith that the Almighty will not let them down in their quest to solve their water problems. I then went back with the surveyor. What a job it was for him as the process involves a lot of walking; at times up to three hours per site in the hot sun.
“The drilling rigs are all currently occupied, maybe due to the hot spell. The area we will be drilling is the same one where we have added the pipes. We hope to do the work as soon as we can get a free rig which can be anytime now. Sometimes they promise then something comes up and they push the days forward. Only yesterday I was promised next week so our fingers are crossed.”
Access to a local, consistent water supply remains one of the biggest challenges for the communities in Zimbabwe. They are grateful for the partnership with churches and individuals that makes the drilling of new wells possible.
