Community Gets Behind Isla School

Isla Mission School on Tanna Island in Vanuatu experienced a new breath of life once again in August last year with the appointment of a new principal (Witnold Bule), and a new school council and chairman. Many in the surrounding communities turned out bringing rakes, bush knives and tools to clear the area around the school in preparation for its re-opening. Children who had left returned and many new children began attending. The two primary school teachers and pre-school teacher were re-employed.
This year the school also employed another pre-school teacher with the community supporting the payment of his salary. Currently there are five teachers and 114 students at Isla Mission School. On Saturday 21 August the school committee organized another fundraising event. They were hoping to match the community event held earlier this year which raised over 40,000 vatu ($460) for the school.
