Celebrating New Opportunities in Vietnam

A solid brick house means a stable dwelling and a new beginning for a minority family in Vietnam. The construction of two new houses, along with two new wells and tanks, has just been completed in the village of Dong Tam. The official handing over ceremonies for each of these is being held tomorrow. Bad weather had hindered the construction work on the two homes so it is good have them finished. Construction of another four wells and tanks for minority families in Tan Loi is currently in progress.

COCOA’s permit of operation in Vietnam has been renewed for a further year, the maximum allocation that the local committee will grant. COCOA has been asked to consider establishing a new Small Grant’s Program where a donation is provided to a hamlet. The funds are controlled by the Women’s Union of the District. The loan is typically around $30 to invest in a sewing machine or the purchase of livestock to assist them in developing a small business, and is repayable within six months. Once the first loan is repaid a higher amount can be borrowed. These programs have proved very successful in assisting those with minimal income to get established in small business and provide a stable income for their family.

John and Lan Dean, who have oversight of the work of COCOA in Vietnam, will be returning to Australia on Wednesday 26 August. Part of their time in Australia will be spent in deputation in WA. John will also have some health checks while in Melbourne.
