Water for Life

Since the drilling programme commenced in Zimbabwe three years ago fifty-two boreholes have been drilled. Of the 10 boreholes drilled and equipped with pumps in 2009 from COCOA donations (New Zealand donated another four) there was a 90% success rate. Only one was dry after drilling to a depth of 60 metres. Eight of the latest wells were established at Mabasa and two at Palawani. Both of these locations are in the Zvishavane area which is a big district. A major consideration when an area is selected for drilling is whether it is serviced by a major road from which to branch off into the rural settlements. Drilling all 10 boreholes in relatively close proximity avoids paying relocation costs for the drilling rig.
However some of the boreholes drilled recently are running out of water due to inadequate piping. More piping will be added to the two bores which are reported to be running low. Boniface Mpofu, Showers of Blessing Project Director, will also be checking the flow from the other older wells.
There continues to be a great need for water holes in the arid regions of Zimbabwe. This project is vital in alleviating poverty and in providing a clean water source for the communities to avoid diseases such as cholera.
Food Aid
Last year’s harvest was relatively good but this year Zimbabwe is again experiencing drought. The rainy season has almost come to an end and the rains have been minimal to date. Ways of providing food security for affected people will be reviewed in the coming months and a plan established.
