Victims of War
Posted on Tue, 09/02/2010
It is impossible to get accurate statistics in Sudan, but the number of fatalities after forty years of civil war is estimated as high as two million. Orphans and widows are everywhere, living as best they can in communities devastated by war and gradually adjusting to life in a precarious “post-war era”.
When Steve Blacket (Magill Church of Christ, SA) and Joseph Mawien (United Sudanese Fellowship, SA) visited Sudan in 2008 the Deputy Governor drew their attention to the orphans living on the streets in Aweil Town. He had gathered over 400 children from the streets and warned that without supervision they would form into gangs. The governor asked if they could provide a programme which could provide basic education and vocational training so this new generation of “lost boys” (and girls) could contribute to the development of their community.
Steve and Joseph (along with Ros Stafford-Green) have just returned from a second visit to Sudan. Sudan Partnership is attached with their latest news.
